In the words of one of our wise Charting Careers students: “I want a mentor who wants to grow and learn with me.”

Being a mentor with Charting Careers will challenge, motivate and engage you in a process that can be life-changing for your student and also, for you.

Charting Careers mentors are interested in listening and learning about what makes their mentee tick. They work with students to set long and short term goals around education, social and emotional growth and physical health. Mentors walk forward with mentees to explore career paths and network with professionals.

Participate in:

  • Personal relationship building with a mentee and the Charting Careers community

  • Educational opportunities for mentor development including new mentor orientations, regular quarterly meetings and trainings, online resources and personalized attention

  • Group activities including college visits/fairs, onsite company visits and fun

  • Advocating with the Charting Careers community for equity in education

Most of us have had a teacher, supervisor, or coach who has been a mentor to us and made a positive difference in our lives. Mentors share some basic qualities:

  • A sincere desire to be involved with a young person

  • Respect for young people and joy in lifting them up

  • Active listening skills

  • Empathy and openness to learning about culture, community, sexual identity or preference, religion that may be different from your own

  • Ability to see solutions and opportunities

  • Flexibility and resiliency

  • Determination to create equitable opportunities for youth

A complete background check, personal interview and references are required - each is reviewed on a case-case basis.
