Tutoring Opportunities at Charting Careers

Tutors play a powerful role in helping students gain confidence, master skills, and discover the joy of learning. At Charting Careers, we connect caring volunteers with elementary, middle, and high school scholars who benefit from one-on-one or small group academic support.

✨ Elementary Reading Tutor

Elementary Reading Tutors join our after-school program on Mondays and/or Wednesdays from 3–5 pm to work one-on-one or in small groups with young learners.

Goals of Tutoring:

  • Strengthen elementary scholars’ academic and social-emotional growth

  • Support a love of learning and reading with engaging, culturally relevant texts

  • Provide individualized literacy instruction to help scholars become confident readers

  • Partner with parents and staff to support children’s literacy and overall development

✨ Tutoring with Middle or High School Scholars

When older students need extra help beyond what school can provide, we match them with tutors in their specific subject areas. Tutors typically meet scholars at the public library once a week, creating a supportive space for personalized learning and growth.

✅ Tutoring Requirements

To ensure the best experience for both tutors and scholars, we ask that tutors:

  • Be at least 16 years old

  • Commit to one year of weekly sessions

  • Live within commuting distance of Annapolis, MD

  • Be dependable, consistent, and willing to follow program policies

  • Attend tutor training sessions and communicate regularly with staff

  • Submit activity information and welcome constructive feedback

  • Have reliable transportation to tutoring sessions

🌟 Benefits of Tutoring

Tutors often say they get as much out of the experience as they give. Benefits include:

  • Personal fulfillment from helping a young person succeed

  • Connection to a vibrant volunteer community

  • Satisfaction in seeing growth, progress, and confidence

  • Skill development in teaching, communication, and leadership

  • Connection across generations and cultures

  • Invitations to volunteer appreciation events and ongoing learning opportunities
