New Community Initiative Launched at The Residences of Annapolis Gardens
A dynamic new weekly program launching in the Annapolis Gardens community aims to connect residents with critical resources while fostering connection, well-being, and community pride. The initiative will kick off with a celebratory ribbon cutting on April 23rd from 4-6 pm.
This resident-focused effort is led by Diesha Contee, Charting Careers’ Community Impact Specialist, and Annapolis Gardens Community Vice President Shawnte Brown in partnership with Annapolis Gardens, Winn Residential, the City of Annapolis, and First Baptist Church of Annapolis. With a strong background in community organizing, Ms. Contee is passionate about driving sustainable change and strengthening neighborhoods from within. Learn more here.
Charting Careers Receives A New Grant to Empower Youth
We’re excited to share that Charting Careers has been selected as a recipient of CADCA’s Take Back Your 10 mini-grant!
This national initiative draws attention to the 10 years tobacco use can take from a person’s life—and empowers youth to reclaim their futures through prevention and education.
With this grant, our team will integrate Take Back Your 10 activities into our programming, engaging young people in exploring how tobacco marketing, pricing, and retailer density impact their communities. Together, we’ll raise awareness, spark important conversations, and promote healthier choices.

Charting Careers, Inc. Champions Equity, Supports the Underserved, Provides Free Programs
Charting Careers, Inc., an Annapolis-based nonprofit consisting of 14 staff members and a legion of volunteers, goes above and beyond the scope of typical mentoring while incorporating family partnership and assistance for parents or caregivers.
Dr. Erin Snell, executive director of Charting Careers, explained that the nonprofit strives to recruit students and families who face obstacles or barriers to opportunity, such as living in a low-income neighborhood, experiencing loss, or incarceration of a caregiver.

Naptown Scoop Announces New Grant
The White House Office of National Drug Control Policy awarded Charting Careers with a 5-year $125K Drug-Free Communities grant. Charting Careers, a local nonprofit focusing on Annapolis youth and families, joins a handful of other Maryland communities to receive an award this grant cycle. The funding will support their goals of advocating policy changes and preventing and reducing youth substance use.
Career Day Inspires Annapolis Youth
Almost 40 adults from various professions, including artists, marine service leaders. firefighters, entrepreneurs, and more, volunteered their time to share their personal career journeys with more than 250 seventh grade students at Annapolis Middle School on March 7th at our annual Career Day.

Joniece Pitts Awarded Larry L. Griffin Scholarship
Larry L. Griffin’s leadership and advocacy significantly impacted the Clay Street community and greater Annapolis. At the recent Scholarship and Awards Night hosted by Charting Careers, the inaugural Larry L. Griffin Scholarship was awarded to Joniece Pitts, a junior at Towson University studying Art and Design. Sponsored by the Inner West Street Association (IWSA), this scholarship honors Griffin’s dedication to improving Annapolis and supports a deserving student.
Rotary Club of Annapolis Raises $80,000 for Charting Careers!
The Rotary Club of Annapolis was pleased to welcome staff from Charting Careers on April 18, 2024, as the club presented them with a check for $80,000. The funds are the proceeds from the 2024 Black Tie & Diamonds Gala, which was held on March 9, 2024.

Charting Careers Featured In the Eye on Annapolis Business Spotlight
A while back, we spoke with Jo Ann at STAIR and learned that their services stop at second grade. But what about beyond? Enter Erin Snell and Charting Careers!
Erin is the Executive Director who is steering the ship and steering our Annapolis area under-served youth to success in middle school, high school, college, and career. Combined with a small staff and a small army of volunteers, this local non-profit is truly making a difference in the lives of students and young adults, but also of their families.
The Charting Careers program is seeing its success as “their kids” excel in school and move on to careers and higher education, which was seemingly out of reach. This is an organization worthy of financial support as well as volunteer support–you can be a mentor or even something as simple as driving a student to a program that would otherwise be inaccessible.
Charting Careers Puts A Wellness Grant to Good Use with Annapolis Maritime Museum
From an excited shout of a child catching a fish to the pride felt in helping to raise a sail, our community is well aware that a day on the water can provide life-changing experiences. During a recent Sunset Cruise on the historic skipjack, Wilma Lee, approximately 30 Annapolis youth, and parents/caregivers enjoyed a beautiful evening connecting with nature and each other. This cruise is just one example of the impactful programming and long-standing partnership between Annapolis families, Charting Careers (CC), and Annapolis Maritime Museum & Park (AMM) made possible in part through a $30,000 Building Bridges to Wellness grant provided by the Fund for Anne Arundel, through the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County.
“ANYTHING IS POSSIBLE” FOR ANNAPOLIS YOUTH
Designing their home study space was just one of the many benefits Charting Careers, an Annapolis non-profit focusing on youth, offered their scholars during Orientation Night on Tuesday, August 22, at Pip Moyer Recreation Center. Twenty Annapolis elementary, middle, and high school students with their guardians registered for free academic tutoring, mentoring, family partnership, and exciting activities and adventures.

County Executive Pittman, Arundel Community Development Services Announce FY24 Community Support Grant Award Recipients.
Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman announced the 69 community-based organizations selected to receive grant funding through the county’s Community Support Grant program managed by Arundel Community Development Services, Inc. (ACDS). “Educating our children, assisting people with disabilities, providing families with fresh food, connecting individuals to physical and mental health care, and so much more. The services our local nonprofits provide are essential to our mission of making Anne Arundel County The Best Place - For All,” said County Executive Steuart Pittman. “By providing these funds, we expand the number of programs offered and the number of residents served, building their capacity to care for our communities for decades to come.”
Charting Careers Takes Annapolis Youth to African American Museum in DC

Charting Careers and the Obery Court-College Creek Terraces Residences Council (OBC-CCT), provided a group of students from the Greater Clay Street, Woodside Gardens, and Eastport communities an opportunity to visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, June 20. The students were inspired by powerful and poignant exhibits such as Juneteenth, which explores the African American celebration of tastes, sounds and experiences to those focusing on history, culture, arts, and the resiliency of its communities. The group of 35 students from ages 7 through 12 years old were joined by Charting Careers’ Staff, including Community Impact Specialists Renetra Anderson and Ron-Shaye Clark and Education Director Ashley Mackell, OBC-CCT President Veronica Grant, City Leaders including William Rowel and Erin Lee from the Mayor’s Office, Donna Johnson and other community chaperones.
Charting Careers Celebrates Our Scholars

Charting Careers held its annual Scholarship and Awards Night on Wednesday, May 17th at the Annapolis Marine Museum. It was an exhilarating evening celebrating the achievements of elementary, middle, high school, and college students, and their parents/caregivers. Academic scholarships were awarded to four high school seniors and five continuing college students, most of whom are the first in their families to go to college. “We are so proud of our young scholars who persevere through challenges, discover their own power, and reach their goals,” remarks Charting Careers Executive Director Erin Snell.
Charting Careers Annual Scholarship and Awards Night Celebrated In-person

Charting Careers held its annual scholarships and awards dinner at Quiet Waters Park on May 19, 2021 in an outside celebration just as COVID restrictions were lifted. The organization honored scholars and families who are centered in the Charting Careers Community of mentoring, college & career readiness, and family partnership along with their Charting Careers mentors, tutors, staff, board members, and the Annapolis community.
Thirteen Local Civil and Human Rights Activists to be Honored
The 33rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Awards Program will air virtually on Friday, January 15, 2021 at 6 p.m. The program will conclude with a viewing of the award-winning short film, "The Dream Revisited: Civil Rights In Perspective," followed by a virtual discussion of local leaders and activists, "Is Dr. King's dream being nurtured in Anne Arundel County today?"
Charting Careers Builds a Mentoring Community for Annapolis Youth
