Scholarships

Charting Careers’ Scholarship Program provides financial support to help our high school graduates and college students pursue their educational and career goals. Scholarships are awarded to participants who have been actively engaged in Charting Careers programs and demonstrate perseverance, leadership, and commitment to their dreams. Funds are not given directly to students but are paid to educational institutions or directly toward approved expenses such as tuition, books, and required supplies. This ensures that resources go exactly where they are needed, removing barriers and opening doors to brighter futures.

Due to the generosity of donors, we have the following special scholarships for Charting Careers Scholars:

  • The Anonymous Donor Scholarship

  • The Geisel Family Scholarship

  • Joshua One Nine Scholarship - yearly scholarship(s) from our Charting Careers Endowment Fund with the Anne Arundel County Community Foundation

  • The Larry L. Griffin Scholarship from the Inner West St. Association - a scholarship for a student with roots in the Greater Clay St. Community in honor of Larry L. Griffin

  • The Charles Shivery Tribute Scholarship - Established by the Employees of Lanterna Distributors for a student pursuing a degree in finance, accounting or a related field such as business administration, economics, or financial management

  • The Gene Deems Scholarship - scholarship(s) for a student(s) pursuing diverse studies and giving back to the community. Mr. Deems is committed to walking beside Annapolis youth and families to chart brighter futures.

  • The Arthur (Buzz) & Joan Stillinger Scholarship - scholarship(s) for a student pursuing studies in nursing, health and human services, or other medical fields

  • The Rotary Club of Parole (Annapolis) - The Rotary Club of Parole has selected a Charting Careers’ scholar as their scholarship recipient

How Scholarships Work at Charting Careers

At Charting Careers, scholarships are designed to remove practical barriers so scholars can fully participate in academic, enrichment, and career-building opportunities.

Here’s how it works:

1. Identifying the Need
Scholarship requests are reviewed collaboratively by our program team in partnership with scholars and families. We assess each request to ensure it aligns with the scholar’s goals, our mission of whole-person growth, and our capacity for giving.

2. Direct Payment for Transparency
Whenever possible, Charting Careers pays funds directly to the school, program, or vendor. If an item is needed (such as a laptop, books, uniforms, testing fees, or equipment), we purchase the item directly rather than providing cash assistance.

3. Purpose-Driven Support
Scholarships may support:

  • Tuition and program fees

  • College or workforce certification costs

  • Testing fees (SAT, ACT, AP exams, certification exams)

  • Required materials (books, technology, tools, uniforms)

  • Enrichment programs, camps, or career exposure opportunities

4. Built-In Accountability
Our team maintains documentation of all payments and purchases. Scholars are supported with mentoring, academic check-ins, and goal-setting to ensure scholarship support contributes to sustained progress.

5. Beyond the Dollar Amount
A Charting Careers scholarship is not a one-time transaction. It is paired with mentoring, coaching, and family partnership — ensuring scholars have both financial support and consistent guidance.

Why This Model Matters

By paying schools and vendors directly and staying closely engaged with each scholar’s progress, we ensure:

  • Responsible stewardship of donor funds

  • Clear alignment with academic or career goals

  • Reduced financial stress for families

  • Increased persistence and long-term success

Every scholarship is an investment in stability, confidence, and opportunity.
